The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has several reimbursement grant programs available for recreational trails and local park projects including the Clean Ohio Trail Fund (COTF), Recreational Trails Program (RTP), NatureWorks, and the Land & Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).

Safe Routes to School

The Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program provides federal funds to enable and encourage children in grades K-8, including those with disabilities, to walk or bicycle to school. SRTS will fund up to 100% of project cost. Eligible project types include infrastructure projects to improve safety for students within two miles of school and non-infrastructure activities to improve safety or encourage walking and bicycling to school such as education, encouragement, enforcement, or evaluation. Priority is given to projects providing a safety benefit. Applicants must first complete a School Travel Plan (STP).

Transportation Alternatives Program

The Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) provides federal funds for projects that advance non-motorized transportation and recreational facilities, including historic transportation preservation. Transportation Alternatives may fund 80% of eligible costs for construction and/or eligible acquisition activities. Eligible projects may include bicycle and pedestrian facilities; safe routes for non-drivers; conversion and use of abandoned railroad corridors; construction of turnouts, overlooks and viewing areas; environmental mitigation; and preservation of historic transportation facilities and archaeological sites.
