Fall 2024 – Project Spotlight

Enhancing Pedestrian Safety Access, Improving Historic Bridges, and Cleaning Storm Sewers

Trimble Road Tunnel Project

KEM was selected to provide plan design, right of way development and acquisition, along with construction contract administration and inspection services for the Trimble Road Tunnel Project. This project represents the second phase of a 3-phase community development project that will connect Mansfield’s existing multi-use path to the 18.4-mile B & O Bike Trail. This stretch of Trimble Road is heavily commuted with average vehicle traffic in excess of 15 thousand cars per day. Having said this, an “at grade “crossing was deemed too dangerous, so the design utilized a 96’ stretch of 15’ wide by 12’ tall 4-sided box culvert to safely convey pedestrian traffic beneath Trimble Rd. The tunnel is equipped with lighting and security and the interior walls will ultimately become a mural. More than 10,000 CY of excavated material was removed from the project site and will be utilized as fill for the next phase of the project that will begin construction in the spring of 2025. The project was completed by Adena Construction Company of Mansfield.

North Lake Park Bridge Replacement

KEM provided construction contract administration and inspection services for the North Lake Park Bridge Replacement Project in the City of Mansfield. This was the second sandstone veneer bridge that KEM was selected for in North Lake Park since 2020. The original crossing was a simple 2 channel 3-sided box culvert with a guardrail at the inlet and a handrail at the outlet. The new design utilized a four-sided box culvert with the addition of inlet/outlet wing walls that were constructed of cast in place concrete with a custom sandstone veneer. The new veneer was salvaged from several demolition projects within the City. In addition to adding cosmetic appeal within the park, the design captured stream flow from the channel to provide a secondary source of flow into North Lake itself in an effort improve water quality and reduce stagnation within the lake. The project was completed by Adena Construction Company of Mansfield.

City of Massillon State Route 21 Storm Sewer Cleaning

KEM was hired by the City of Massillon to clean the storm sewer collection system along State Route 21. The storm sewer system had not been cleaned in several years, leaving many of the catch basins, median inlets and outfalls completely blocked and inoperable. KEM worked directly with City personnel in providing traffic control along the 4-lane divided highway so that the work could be completed safely for both KEM’s crew and the traveling public along this arterial highway.
