What is a Sneckdown and How It Works

A sneckdown—short for ‘snowy neckdown’—is a naturally occurring traffic-calming indicator that appears after snowfall. When vehicles drive through fresh snow, they compact only the parts of the road they actually use. The remaining untouched snow accumulates in unused roadway areas, revealing excess street space that cars do not need. This phenomenon highlights opportunities for safer street design. Research shows that sneckdowns can identify ideal locations for curb extensions, narrower lanes, or pedestrian islands. Because the snow patterns accurately reflect real traffic behavior, urban planners and safety advocates use them to visualize where road space can be reclaimed to slow traffic and improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.
